Biography
"Born in Requejo (Zamora, Spain) in 1953, he got his Master Degree in the University of Santiago de Compostela (Galicia) and then the Ph D degree in the same university in 1978. His work has been mainly devoted to the study of Differential Geometry and Its Applications to Mechanics and Mathematical Physics He has been the advisor of 8 PhD students, and is currently member of several Editorial Boards and Scientific Committees. Research Professor in the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC) and Chief of the Department of Mathematics (CSIC); he also was the Vice-Director of the Institute of Mathematics and Fundamental Physics (CSIC), 1992-1998. He founded the series of International Fall Workshops on Geometry and Physics. He was refounder and vicepresident of the Real Sociedad Matemática Española (RSME), and Director of La Gaceta de la RSME. Coordinator of the Spanish Committee for the World Mathematical Year 2000. He is the President of the Spanish Committee for Mathematics and President of the International Congress of Mathematicians ICM2006-Madrid and current member of the Executive Committee of the International Mathematical Union. He is member of several national and international committees for assesment of Science."
