Biography

His areas of interest include international arbitration, international and comparative civil procedure, and comparative legal history. Prof. de Benito has taught or done research at the Yale Law School (US), the Max Planck Institute for Comparative and International Private Law in Hamburg (Germany), the Royal College of Spain at Bologna (Italy), Panamerican University (Mexico), Francisco Marroquín University (Guatemala), and Peking University (China), amongst others. He has co-authored a handbook on European Legal History (2013), coordinated a collective book on international arbitration in Europe (2013), authored a book on the binding efficacy of arbitration agreements (2010), and published a number of articles on his fields of interest. For over ten years, Marco has acted in international arbitration proceedings in seats such as London, Paris, Geneva, Madrid, Miami, and Washington D.C., under the ICC, UNCITRAL, ICSID, and Swiss Rules. He is a member of the Procedural Law Board of the Spanish Royal Academy of Jurisprudence and Legislation; has provided advice to the Justice Commission of the Spanish Congress on the reform of the Law on Arbitration (2011); and has obtained and headed the European Module “Towards a Common Private Law of Europe” within the Jean Monnet Program of the European Commission (http://www.jeanmonnet.privatelaw.ie.edu). He is fluent in English, Spanish, and Italian, and can work in German.
