Biography
"He started his research in plant physiology, on the biochemistry of germination in Cicer arietinum (Fabaceae) at the University of Salamanca. Continued with several limnological studies performed in the lakes of Castilla y Leon and Cantabria. He performed karyological and taxonomic studies for the Flora Iberica monographies, working as either, author or editor, for different families (RJB). An influential biogeographic work was his analysis of the distribution patterns of African ferns, where he studied relationships between tropical floras of West and East Africa, and he confirmed the existence of interconnected refuges of biodiversity in this continent. He has published many phylogenetic, biogeographic and phylogeographic studies on several families of angiosperms as Geraniaceae, Campanulaceae and Rosaceae. Some of the studies deal with reproductive biology of these families and were performed in the RJB. Currently, he works on phylogenetic reconstructions, dating, biogeography, and analysis of character evolution in Campanulaceae and Geraniaceae. He has directed the phDs of O. Fiz and M. Alarcón (on Geraniaceae), and C. Roquet (Campanulaceae). Currently, he supervises two phDs: those of M. Mairal (Canarina, RJB) and S. Gracia-Aloy (Geraniaceae and Campanulaceae, IBB)."
