Biography
Educational Background: Ph.D., 1980, Physical Sciences, Universitat de Barcelona. M.Sc., 1976, Physical Sciences, Universitat de Barcelona.
Research Interest
Born in 1954 in Barcelone, he completed a Physics degree at the University of Barcelone in 1976 and got a PhD in Earth Sciences at the University P. et M. Curie, Paris in 1980, and a PhD in Geophysics at the University of Barcelone in 1981. He completed a 7-year stay at the Institut de Physique du Globe de Paris, and other stays as Visiting Professor in different international centres. In 1985 he joined the University of Barcelone as Tenured Professor (Profesor Titular) and moved in 1988 to a research position at the Institute of Earth Sciences-CSIC. He has accomplished internationally recognized research in Earth Sciences, focused on studies on the Earth structure and dynamics, based on techniques of seismology, seismic imaging (deep seismic reflection and refraction profiles, tomography, receiver functions and anisotropy) and development of methods for seismic signal analysis. He has led several national and international projects in different tectonic environments, studying the structure and dynamics of the oceanic and continental lithosphere, continental margins, orogenic systems such as Pyrenees, Himalaias-Tibet or Urals, subduction zones and volcanic systems. He has led also an integrated geosciences approach on the Iberian plate through the Consolider project ‘Topo-Iberia’ that gathers more than 120 permanent researchers from 10 different Spanish Institutions. He has supervised 10 PhD Theses and has published more than 100 research papers in SCI journals, which received around 2400 citations. He has an index h (Hirsch) of 30. He is the Spanish representative in the ORFEUS Board of Directors and in the European EPOS-ESFRI initiative. He has been member of the evaluation panel of the ANEP Spanish Agency on Earth Sciences, and of the CSIC Natural Resources Commission.
