Biography
As the global leader of the Janssen Human Microbiology Institute (JHMI), Dirk intensifies Janssen's research and development leadership, understanding and scientific capabilities in this emerging and expanding area of ​​science. Dirk joined us and recently served as senior group leader of Systems and Microbial Communities at the Broad Institute of Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Harvard. In this position, Dirk fulfilled the role of scientific intermediary between different organizational components, including platforms for the generation of data of the Broad Institute and clinical and analytical collaborators in different projects related to the microbioma. Dirk's research efforts at the Broad Institute included characterizing the microbial imbalance associated with diseases such as Crohn's disease, type 1 diabetes and colorectal cancer. He was also involved in the Human Microbiome Project (HMP) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Dirk received his doctorate in biochemistry from the University of Ghent (UGENT), Belgium, and completed his postdoctoral training at UGent and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in bioinformatics, comparative and evolutionary analysis of the genome and microbial ecology.
