Biography
Dr. Alessandra Di Mariano obtained her M.Sc. degree Civil Engineering in 1995 at the University of Palermo (Italy). After some time working in industry as an independent consultant engineer, she was awarded a research grant at the University of Catania (Italy) in February 1997 where she obtained her PhD in Geotechnical Engineering in February 2001, having spent the last two years of her research at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) (Spain). She was a visiting Lecturer at the University of Palermo (Italy), from September 2000 to June 2001, in the areas of Geotechnics and Underground Constructions. At the same time and until April 2003 she went back working in industry, being involved in a number of tunnelling and deep excavations projects. From May 2003 to February 2008 she returned to UPC as a Senior Researcher in the area of Geotechnical Engineering. Since March 2008, she is now a Staff Scientist at the International Center for Numerical Methods in Engineering (CIMNE).Alessandra Di Mariano has been involved in geotechnical research and consulting for about twenty years. Her research interests include tunnelling and deep excavations, numerical modeling, ground improvement, laboratory testing, field measurements and back-analysis.
