Biography
Ana Palacio Vallelersundi holds degrees in Law and in Sociology and Political Science (Special end of degree award). She is Honorary Doctorate from Georgetown University and in 2016 she has been awarded the Sandra Day O’Connor Justice Prize. She is an attorney specialised in international and European Union law, arbitration and mediation, and a founder of the Palacio y Asociados law firm. Between 1994 and 2002, she was a member of the European Parliament, where she chaired the Legal Affairs and Internal Market Committee, the Justice and Home Affairs Committee and the Conference of Committee Chairs. Former positions include: Spain’s Minister of Foreign Affairs from 2002 to 2004, Member of the Spanish Parliament in its VIII Legislature, timeframe in which she chaired the Joint Congress of Deputies and Senate Commission for the European Union (2004-2006). She was subsequently appointed Senior Vice-President and General Counsel of the World Bank, and was General Secretary of the International Centre for the Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID). In March 2012, she was appointed an Elective Member of Spain’s Council of State, a position that she holds at present. She is also lead Independent Coordinating Director on the Board of Enagás and a member of Invercorp’s International Advisory Board. She sits on the Boards of a number of research centres and public institutions, including: MD Anderson Cancer Center; Atlantic Council (USA); Institute for Strategic Dialogue; Le Conseil d’Orientation et de Réflexion de l’Assurance (CORA); and the World Economic Forum’s Global Agenda Council. In Spain, she is a member of the Scientific Board of Instituto Elcano and a trustee of Fundación para el Análisis y los Estudios Sociales (FAES). She has been visiting professor of the Edmund E. Walsh School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University since 2014.
