Biography
Degree in Medicine and General Surgery at the Autonomous University of Madrid. He received his training as a Radiation Oncology Specialist at Madrid's Puerta de Hierro University Hospital. In 1986, he obtained a doctorate degree with "apto cum laude" and an extraordinary doctorate award (University of Navarra). In 1982-83 he completed his oncology training at the Radiotherapy Unit of the Royal Marsden Hospital (Institute of Cancer Research) in London and in the Department of Radiation Oncology and Nuclear Medicine at Hahnemann University Hospital (Philadelphia-USA). In 1984, he began the oncological project of the University Clinic of Navarra, as the first Director of the Radiation Oncology Service. In 1993, assumed the responsibility of Head of the Department of Oncology of the Regional Cancer Center Prince of Asturias (HGU Gregorio Marañón de Madrid) which is his current professional position. In 1988 he was elected vice president of the Spanish Association of Radiotherapy and Oncology and promoted his independence from the Spanish Society of Medical Radiology and its integration into the Spanish Federation of Oncological Societies. In 1990 he was elected (and re-elected in 1994) as President of the National Commission on the specialty of Radiation Oncology (consultative body of the Ministries of Education and Health). In 1991 he was hired as Full Professor of the Department of Radiation Oncology and Nuclear Medicine at Hahnemann University (Philadelphia), where he developed the intraoperative radiotherapy program and was the director of the Resident Training Program. In 1995 he obtained the position of Professor of Radiation Oncology at the Complutense University of Madrid (linked to the Gregorio Marañón University General Hospital). Since 2007 he is a university professor with a hospital relationship. Since 2006 he is Vice-dean of the General University Hospital Gregorio Marañón. He is currently a collaborator in different oncology research programs, associated with intemational cooperative groups, particularly in the development of precision radiotherapy and intensification projects, such as Intraoperative Radiotherapy and Chemioirradiation. In 1998, a cooperative group of Spanish radiotherapy oncologists who developed research projects for the study of the interaction of drugs with radiotherapy was elected as founding president of GICOR (Clinical Research Group in Radiation Oncology). His scientific output in terms of publications (updated to 2008) includes 6 books as author, 15 as co-editor, has participated in 59 chapters of books, 168 articles in national and intemational scientific journals and 323 abstracts at intemational and national congresses . The bibliometric impact factor of his scientific publications exceeded 200 points in 2007. He belongs to the editorial team of several scientific journals: International Journal of Radiation Oncology Biology and Physics, Radiotherapy and Oncology, American Journal of Clinical Oncology, British Jou al of Radiology, Palliative Medicine and Clinical and Translational Oncology. He is a member of the American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology (ASTRO), the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), the European Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology (ESTRO), the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer "(EORTC) and" Spanish Society of Radiation Oncology "(SEOR) and is elected President of the International Society of Intraoperative Radiation Therapy (ISIORT). "European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer" (EORTC) and "Spanish Society of Radiation Oncology" (SEOR). He is President-elect of the International Society of Intraoperative Radiation Therapy (ISIORT). "European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer" (EORTC) and "Spanish Society of Radiation Oncology" (SEOR). He is President-elect of the International Society of Intraoperative Radiation Therapy (ISIORT).
