Biography

Doctor of Medicine from the Autonomous University of Madrid, Specialist in Psychological Medicine -DPM- awarded by the Royal College of Internal Medicine and the Royal English College of Surgery, Fellow of the Royal English College of Psychiatry -FrcPsych. He holds the positions of Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Cantabria, Head of Psychiatry Service at the Hospital Universitario Marqués de Valdecilla and Director of the Unit of Research in Psychiatry of Cantabria, designated as Collaborating Center of the World Health Organization for Research and Teaching in Mental Health. His research activity has focused mainly on the study of epidemiological and clinical aspects of Mental Illness, the development of evaluation instruments in Psychiatry, Psychiatry in Primary Care and the Early Phases of Mental Illness, focusing on the latter area in the study of the clinical and biological components of Psychoses and Anxiety Disorders. Throughout his professional life, in which he emphasizes his collaboration with a large number of experts and international teams of Psychiatry and Mental Health, he has published more than 150 original articles in international journals, more than 200 chapters in books and monographs of the specialty and more than 10 books on mental illness, including a Handbook on Psychiatry in Primary Care, and various monographs on the Early Phases of Mental Illness. He is a member of the Editorial Committee of scientific journals of the specialty such as British Journal of Psychiatry, Social Psychiatry and Psychiatric Epidemiology and Early Intervention in Psychiatry.
