Biography
José M. Pérez-Pomares (b. 1972) obtained his PhD in Biological Sciences at the University of Málaga, Spain (2000). He was post-doctoral fellow at the Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology, Medical University of South Carolina, Charleston, USA (2000-2002). After returning to Spain, Dr. Pérez-Pomares served as Research Assistant (2002-2004), Assistant Professor (2004-2010) and Associate Professor (2010-) at the Department of Animal Biology, University of Malaga (UMA). In 2010 he was appointed as Visiting Scientist at the National Center for Cardiovascular Research (CNIC) in Madrid, Spain. He and his group joined Bionand´s Nanobiotechnology Area in 2014.
Research Interest
As PI of the “Cardiovascular Development & Disease” (DeCA) research group at BIONAND, Dr. Pérez-Pomares is interested in the developmental bases of cardiovascular disease, and the team aims at identifying new diagnostic and prognostic markers as well as therapeutical targets and advanced therapies to treat the diseased heart. Fundamental topics at the core of the research performed by DeCA members include cardiovascular progenitor/stem cell differentiation (with a focus in the transcriptional regulation of specific populations of non-myocardial tissues by the transcription factors Wt1, Gata4, COUP-TFII and Notch among others); cellular mechanisms of cardiac repair and regeneration; cardiac fibrosis and heart neovascularization. The research of the DeCA group has been/is funded by the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness (MINECO-Plan Nacional I+D+I; MINECO-ISCIII-Cell Therapy Network/TERCEL), the EU Sixth and Seventh Framework Programmes, the NATO Life Science and Technology Program and the Andalusian Government (Junta de Andalucía)
