Biography
Degree in Forestry Engineering ( Universidad de Chile, 1991). M.Sc. in Soil Science (Washington State University, USA, 2000). Ph.D . in Soil Sciences (Washington State University, USA, 2003).My research has focused on the understanding of Soil Ecosystems in the face of human disturbances in agricultural systems, forest plantations and natural ecosystems (temperate rainforests and arid and semi-arid vegetation). The understanding of soil performance, particularly regarding the quality of C, its dynamics in terms of decomposition and its relation with physical, chemical and biological properties have been more emphasized in recent years. I have also considered the evaluation of the environmental effect of the extraction of residues from forest plantations for bioenergy purposes. These residues are usually not extracted from the forest and therefore both the nutrient cycles and the properties of the soil system are altered.
