Biography

rof. Dr. Frans van Geer graduated at Delft University in 1980 and obtained his PhD on 'Applications of Kalman Filtering in the Analysis and Design of Groundwater Monitoring Networks'. Since 1985 he has been a researcher at the Geological survey-TNO. As such he has been involved in the design, evaluation and optimization of groundwater quantity and quality monitoring networks, both as an expert as project leader, in The Netherlands as well as in international projects. Recently the focus of his work is the analysis and characterization of dynamic behavior in groundwater and groundwater surface water interaction. This includes the presentation of these characteristics in information products, that can be disseminated to stakeholders of the national sub-surface database of the Geological Survey of the Netherlands. He is a specialist in classical and geo-statistics, time series analysis and data assimilation and uncertainty analysis techniques and was supervisor of several PhD students in this field. He has been lecturer and course leader in many courses on monitoring and statistics of subsurface processes, amongst others in cooperation with Unesco-IHE and IGWMC. Since 2009 he is appointed adjoint professor at the Utrecht University on the specific topic of methods for soil and groundwater monitoring. He was member of the Dutch working group for implementation of the European Water Framework directive, focusing on monitoring aspects and chairman of the working group time series analysis of the National Hydrological Association.
