Guillermo Thode Mayoral

Biography

Guillermo Thode, encouraged by his interest in Evolution, graduated (1977) in Biological Sciences by the University of Granada and doctoró (1983) by the University of Malaga. Since 1978 he has been a researcher and teacher at this university (UMA) and, since 1991, as Professor of Genetics in the Department of Cell Biology, Genetics and Physiology. His scientific career began when he accessed the Genetics Laboratory of the Department of Cell Biology in 1978 investigating in Fish Cytogenetics (chromosomal characterization of marine teleosts). In order to do this, he learned chromosome extraction techniques from the Institute of Comparative Anatomy "Battista Grassi" of the University of Rome, and techniques for quantification of nuclear DNA and localization of NORs (chromosomal regions of the ribosomal genes) in the Center of Biology Molecular Severo Ochoa of Madrid. In the presence of peculiar chromosomal polymorphisms in some species of the Gobiidae family, the population and evolutionary domain was developed, developing techniques for the characterization of individual chromosomes, such as C-band (satellite DNA or heterochromatin) and replication band.
