Research Interest
Dr Emilio Marañón research deals with the ecology and biogeochemical role of phytoplankton, the unicellular photosynthetic organisms that live in the surface waters of all aquatic ecosystems. In particular I focus on marine phytoplankton diversity and community structure, primary production, nitrogen fixation, calcification and respiration. Current topics under investigation include the size-scaling of phytoplankton abundance and metabolism, the relative role of temperature and resources in controlling microbial growth, and the biogeochemical variability of the subtropical gyres.
