Biography
Graduated in Chemical Sciences from the University of Seville (1993), he did his Doctoral Thesis (1998) in the Department of Inorganic Chemistry of the same university on the study of nanocrystalline materials prepared by condensation in the gas phase. Subsequently, he made his postdoctoral stay on mechanical and tribological properties of carbon-based coatings (1999-2001) at École Centrale de Lyon (LTDS) -France and at Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) -USA. In 2001, he joined the Materials Science Institute of Seville (Joint Center CSIC-University of Seville) as a researcher hired "Ramón y Cajal". Since June 2002 he belongs to the staff of the CSIC and currently holds a position as a Scientific Researcher at the Institute. He is the author of more than 70 articles published in international SCI journals and 3 patents. He has participated in over twenty research projects funded by national, autonomous and European organizations. He co-directed 3 doctoral theses and directs another one in the present. Among his distinctions are: the Royal Maestranza Cavalry Research Prize of Seville 2004 and the Research Support Prize of the Domingo MartÃnez Foundation (course 96/97).
Research Interest
main current lines of research are oriented to the design of new nanostructured materials in the form of coatings or nanoparticles for the improvement of the tribological and mechanical properties. An essential part of it consists in an exhaustive microstructural and chemical characterization of said materials that allows the establishment of correlations with the properties observed and that serves to develop "tailor-made" synthesis according to the requirements of the desired application. Another important line is the understanding of tribological properties (investigation of the involved physical-chemical processes responsible for observed behavior, wear mechanisms, nano-scale tribology).
