Biography

Since my PhD in Computer Music from Stanford University, obtained in 1989, my academic career has been moving and evolving within the field of music technology, always interested in the analysis, description and synthesis of sound and music signals, always trying to find a balance between basic and applied research, and always exploring approaches from both scientific/technological and humanistic/artistic disciplines. My current research is mainly framed by three large projects of which I am the Principal Investigator. In the CompMusic project, funded by the European Research Council, we aim to advance in the automatic description of music by emphasizing cultural specificity. In the AudioCommons project, funded by the European Commission through the Horizon 2020 programme, we are developing technologies with which to facilitate the use Creative Commons audio content by the creative industries. Finally, in the Maria de Maeztu strategic research program, funded by the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness, we focus on data-driven knowledge extraction methodologies and promote open and reproducible research initiatives at the Department level. In the last few years, and in the context of these projects, my research has been moving from core topics in Audio Signal Processing and Music Information Retrieval towards the more musical and cultural focus of Computational Musicology on topics related to the creation of large and structured sound and music corpora and the extraction of useful musical knowledge from them.
