My child has a fever, shouldn’t he take antibiotics? Although it was popularly thought that a fever was a negative occurrence it warns us of a possible infection. Our paediatricians, thanks to various tests (antigenic and acute phase reactants), will determine if the cause is a virus or bacteria because in these cases its use is recommended and useful- These techniques (which are conducted in a few minutes) allow us to diagnose the origin of  the infection and are available at the emergency unit of our hospital. Since my child attends the nursery he/she is constantly ill. Is this a problem with defences? The fact that children attend nursery from a young age means exposing them to infectious agents, what translates into colds, stomach flu, conjunctivitis, etc., which frequently cause a fever. Nevertheless, this situation is normally overcome without major problems. Only the appearance of complications, recurring bacterial infection or the frequent need to use antibiotics should alert the possibility of an immunological disorder and should be consulted with our paediatric specialist in autoimmune diseases.  My child suffers from bronchospasms. Is he/she asthmatic? A child can suffer a single bronchospasm and not have any more. But it is frequent for these episodes to repeat themselves after a cold, infection or exposure to a substance the child is allergic to (asthma). In many cases they disappear before the age of 6. In the case that it is truly asthma (repeated bronchospasms after the ages of 4-6); it may disappear before adolescence or remain for life. At our Paediatric Services we use an “Asthma Predictive Index” to choose the type treatment and monitoring of the patient. In addition, among the detection tests, the ones that stand out are forced spirometry, with the bronchodilator pulmonary function test and the fractional exhaled nitric oxide fraction, which can be conducted on children after the age of 4. Is my child hyperactive? All children have behaviour problems once in a while; only those who suffer from attention deficit hyperactivity disorder or ADHD have more problems the majority of the time (problems to remain sitting, to pay attention and do activities).   Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder affects 4-12% of school-aged children and includes three symptom groups: lack of attention, hyperactivity and impulsiveness.  Remember that on occasions children show some of these symptoms and that does not mean they have ADHD. Our paediatrician will determine if your children suffers from it, using guides developed by official bodies. At Vithas Xanit International Hospital we have very useful new technologies like diagnostic support even in the smallest children. Are there child specialists at Vithas Xanit International Hospital? In Spain it is recommended that all children under 14 should be attended to by paediatricians. Certain pathologies and the different use of medications in children (some approved for adults and not paediatrics, dosage in function of weight, etc.) are sufficient reasons to have implemented it. At our hospital, children are assessed by general paediatricians and specialists in specific areas in which they develop the knowledge and techniques specific to the speciality.
