R C W M R A Nugawela
Prof. Nugawela joined the Rubber Research Institute of Sri Lanka in the capacity of an Assistant Botanist in 1980. He was awarded a Colombo Plan Scholarship in 1981 to read for his Masters Degree and in 1982 he successfully completed it in the field of Applied Plant Sciences at the University of London. In 1985 he was offered a scholarship by the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations to obtain his professional qualifications. For his research work on Plant Physiology and Bio Productivity in Hevea brasiliensis he was awarded a PhD from the University of Essex, UK in 1989. His thrust areas of research and development were on nursery and planting practices, exploitation, use of yield stimulants and rain guards. He has more than 130 publications in both local and foreign research journals and has addressed many local and international conferences on Natural Rubber. In January 2011, Prof. Nugawela resigned from the post of Director of Rubber Research Institute to assume duties as the Chair Professor in the Department of Plantation Management, Wayamba University of Sri Lanka. For his Research and Development work he has won the National Science and Technology Award in 2009 and the Presidential Award for inventions in the category of environment in 2012. Further he has also been awarded with Presidential Awards for his research publications in reputed international journals. He has served as a World Bank Consultant to the Smallholder Rubber Rehabilitation Project in Sri Lanka during 1992 and then as a JICA Consultant to the Natural Rubber Development Project in Ghana during the period 1998 to 2000. Prof. Nugawela is currently serving in the Board of Directors of both Lalan Rubbers (Pvt) Ltd., and Kegalle Plantations PLC.
