Carl Johan Franzén

Biography

Carl Johan Franzén is Associate Professor in Bioreaction Engineering. His research deals with bioprocess development, kinetic modeling and control of microbial metabolism. He uses network and kinetic modeling and physiologically based control of bioprocesses to optimize production of chemicals using yeast cell factories. One key application is the development of bioethanol production from lignocellulosic raw materials. In recent years, he has developed methodology for encapsulation of yeast to improve the process robustness. The physiological consequences of this has been studied by e.g. proteomics. Carl Johan is also an active teacher and Head of Programme for the five-year MScEng Bioengineering program.
