Biography
Paul Gatenholm is Professor of Biopolymer Technology at the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering at Chalmers University of Technology in Gotenburg, Sweden and Adjunct Professor of Biomaterial Engineering at Virginia Polytechnic Institute in Blacksburg, Virginia. His research focus is on relationships between structure and material properties of polysaccharides with special interest in assembly of polysaccharides into hierarchical structures. He has recently started interdisciplinary research program on applications of polysaccharides as scaffolds for tissue engineering of connective tissue and blood vessels. He received his education in Organic Chemistry at Stockholm University and Ph.D. in Polymer Technology at Chalmers. He has been post doc at UNSW in Sydney, Australia, Affiliate Professor at Center for Bioengineering at University of Washington in Seattle, visiting professor at Naval Research Laboratory in Washington D.C. and is currently visiting professor at Georgia Tech, Atlanta, USA. The research group consists of 1 senior scientist, 9 Ph.D. students and 10 master students. He has been the main supervisor for 6 PhD students and 6 licentiates. He has received the Award as best tutor at Chalmers year 2005 and the best teacher at Chalmers year 2000. He had published more than 150 publications and he is member of editorial board of two journals. He has filed several Swedish and International patents. He recently received several Awards for his innovation of new oxygen barrier materials based on Xylans and for commercialization of this innovation by starting up Xylophane company. He is a member of Executive Committee of Cellulose and Renewable Material Division of American Chemical Society and has acted as Award Chair, Program Chair and is currently Division Chair. He has organized numbers of successful Symposia, Workshops and has recently been Chair of Gordon Conference on Chemistry of Polysaccharides.
