Biography
Dr. Bellgrau earned his Ph.D. in Immunology at the University of Pennsylvania under the mentorship of Darcy Wilson. His thesis work was devoted to the role of the T cell receptor in graft versus host disease. He also worked with Clyde Barker and Ali Naji on the BB rat model of type I diabetes. He was subsequently awarded post doctoral fellowships from both the Damon Runyon and the American Cancer Society. These fellowships funded post doctoral research in Uppsala Sweden in the laboratory of Hans Wigzell. He left Uppsala to accept a position as a member of the research staff at the Basel Institute for Immunology in Basel Switzerland where he became interested in cancer immunotherapy while pursuing his continued involvement in the immunobiology of type I diabetes. After three years in Basel he accepted a position at the Barbara Davis Center for Childhood Diabetes in Denver, Colorado, where he remained for 10 years. He left the Barbara Davis Center to become Program Leader in Immunology/Immunotherapy of the University of Colorado Cancer Center and pursued his interest in immunotherapy. During this time he was one of the scientific founders of GlobeImmune, a privately held biotechnology company targeting cancer and infectious diseases. He Chairs GlobeImmune’s Scientific Advisory Board and holds multiple patents involving its intellectual property. GlobeImmune has raised over 120 million dollars and developed products targeting pancreatic cancer and hepatitis C. These immunotherapies have both successfully completed Phase 2 testing. Presently Dr. Bellgrau is a tenured Full Professor in the Integrated Department of Immunology at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. The department and his lab are located at National Jewish Health in Denver.
