Biography
Erik Renström is Professor of Experimental Endocrinology at Lund University. He is a medical doctor and has been studying diabetes for more than 20 years. Erik Renström works in the interdisciplinary field of medical cell biology, physics and medical technology. A well-known example of this is study of how remote controlled superparamagnetic nanoparticles can be controlled to be taken up in cells and trigger specific cellular responses. The group's work has been priced on several occasions.
Research Interest
Renströms research focuses on insulin-producing beta cells in pancreas, which are central in almost all cases of diabetes mellitus. Renström specifically studies different ion channels and hormone receptors with a wide range of methods from single cell technicians to clinical trials. Erik and his colleagues have over the years made several groundbreaking discoveries that have attracted great international attention about the normal reactions of beta cells and, above all, what is wrong with the development of Type 2 diabetes. A known example is the finding that an excess of adrenergic alpha 2A receptors is a common cause of type 2 diabetes and that this disorder is accessible to drug treatment.
