Carmela Miniscalco

Biography

 Carmela Miniscalco is Associate Professor in speech and language pathology and a clinical lecturer at the Division of Speech and Language Pathology and the Gillberg Neuropsychiatry Centre at the University of Gothenburg. She has worked clinically with children with speech and language difficulties for over 25 years and has always been interested in children with ESSENCE. She is one of the project leaders of AUDIE (AUtism Detection and Intervention in Early life) – a project which was conducted at CNC* in collaboration with child care centres and autism habilitation centres in Gothenburg 2009-2011. She has authored around 30 articles and a book chapter on language and communication difficulties and how they relate to neuropsychiatric disabilities. Carmela is currently supervising two PhD students. Her main interest within the clinic, research and teaching is the development of language and communication and language disorders in children with autism. She is the main applicant and the principal investigator in a FAS/FORTE 3-year project started in 2014 and named "Language ability in children with autism spectrum disorder: A population-based longitudinal study." She is also the main applicant and the project manager for a Swedish Inheritance Fund Commission (Arvsfonden) project that started in 2013: “Interventions for young children with autism: Knowledge, method development and intervention from a participatory perspective”. This project is expected to last for three years and aims to improve the interventions offered to preschool children with autism after assessment, through 1) parent training in the clinic, 2) increased preschool support 3) knowledge dissemination.
