Biography
Jan Andersson, born 1951 in Örgryte, is a Swedish doctor and professor of medicine, with a research focusing on infectious diseases. Jan Andersson studied medicine at Karolinska Institutet where he graduated in 1978, and in 1985 he became a doctor of medicine on a doctoral thesis on Epstein-Barr virus. He became a professor of infectious medicine in 1987 and 1991, a senior physician at the infection unit at Karolinska Hospital. In 1995 he became a senior lecturer in infectious medicine. From December 1, 1998 he is a professor of infectious diseases at Karolinska Institutet. His research team, among other things, has studied the production of cytokines at the cellular level to investigate the immune response to, among other things, gland fever and HIV infection. Between January 1, 2010 and January 1, 2013 he was a pro-rector at Karolinska Institutet. In 2013 he was appointed Director of Research in Stockholm County Council.
