Biography
The piston ring to cylinder liner (PRCL) contact in an IC engine is responsible for a significant proportion of the total frictional losses in the engine. The goal of this project is to develop a tool to aid in the optimizing of these surfaces to reduce friction, wear and oil consumption. Simulations have been developed to predict the lubricant regime, friction and oil distribution in the PRCL contact. This allows a range of potential new surface textures to be investigated and evaluated virtually. Engine tests have also been conducted with different liner variants to assist in validating the simulation. This project is in collaboration with Scania.
