Biography
Fredrik's PhD-project concerns advanced treatment methods for polluted stormwater. Urban run-off from large traffic intersection and industrial areas often contain pollutants originating from emissions, exhausts and particles from car brake/tire abrasion. These are often small metal particles and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and they have a toxic effect on the recipient they end up in. Presently, urban run-off is not treated to a larger extent. There are systems in place, such as dams, that aims to primarily delay the run-off but also have a secondary treatment effect in sedimentation. Unfortunately small particles don't readily sediment in these systems and a large portion of the pollutants end up in the recipient anyway. It is within this context Fredrik's research takes place. Ongoing research is an evaluation of different coagulants and flocculants on snowmelt. Both commercial products commonly used in wastewater treatment plants, and drinking water production plants are tested alongside other interesting products such as biopolymers. Later in the PhD-project there are plans to study reactive filters and membrane filters.
