Joosten has a background in organic chemistry. He has worked for 1,5 years at MercaChem where he synthesized small molecules for pharmaceutical companies. From 2000 to 2002 he did a master in bioinformatics where he developed a database for the nuclear receptor protein family. He applied this knowledge during his Ph.D. at the Wageningen university where he developed a system, called 3DM, which can automatically build protein family databases. He received his Ph.D. in 2006 and focused on bringing the 3DM technology into market. In 2007 he won a business challenge with his idea to market 3DM and received seed money for starting the company.
