Biography
Alvarez has more than 15 years of experience in the field of neuroimmunology where he has studied disorders like Neurocysticercosis and Multiple Sclerosis (MS). For this purpose, Dr. Alvarez has integrated in vitro, in vivo, ex vivo and postmortem approaches using primary cultures of human/murine cells, animal models as well as a close collaboration with clinicians. Dr. Alvarez is a respected investigator in the CNS barriers and neuroimmunology fields and in recent years has unveiled novel pathways controlling barrier function in the CNS vasculature as well as mechanisms regulating CNS immune quiescence. He currently holds the David Torrey Career Development Award from the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada.
