Biography

Brian Sung, M.D., is the Medical Director for the Surgical Program at Swedish Weight Loss. Dr. Sung is a board certified general surgeon and fellowship trained bariatric surgeon. Born and raised in Los Angeles, Dr. Sung completed his undergraduate education in California at the University of California at Berkeley. Dr. Sung received his medical degree at Boston University School of Medicine, and returned to his home state of California for his general surgery residency training at Los Angeles County + University of Southern California. During his residency, Dr. Sung was awarded a research fellowship in colorectal surgery in addition to the Resident Teaching Award in 2008. Dr. Sung furthered his training at Stanford University, completing his fellowship in Minimally Invasive and Bariatric Surgery in addition to being appointed Clinical Instructor. His training in bariatric surgery included the gastric bypass, vertical sleeve gastrectomy, adjustable gastric band, and revisional bariatric surgery. In addition, Dr. Sung played an integral role in the initial experience of the Per Oral Endoscopic Myotomy (POEM) at Stanford. As part of his minimally invasive training, Dr. Sung is well versed in both general and bariatric surgery applications of robotic, single incision, and endoluminal surgery. Dr. Sung’s introduction to the power of bariatric surgery began as a medical student. He recalls caring for a bariatric patient who preoperatively was a brittle diabetic with significant insulin requirements but postoperatively required no insulin coverage at all. Having such a dramatic impact on a patient’s health and quality of life is why bariatric surgery became his vocation. In addition to spending time with his wife and son, Dr. Sung is an avid outdoorsman and enthusiast of the performing and culinary arts. He completed his education from Boston University School of Medicine, Residency in General Surgery from Los Angeles County & University of Southern California and Fellowship in Minimally Invasive and Bariatric Surgery from Stanford University. He is also member of Professional Associations like ASMBS, ACS, SAGES.

Research Interest

His research areas of interests are bariatric revision surgery, da vinci robotic gastric bypass surgery, duodenal switch, endocrine surgery, endoscopic surgery, fundoplication, gastric anomaly, gastric banding, gastric bypass and gastric sleeve.
