For a long time, it has been known that mammalian metabolism and growth is controlled by hormones whose secretion is regulated by the levels in the blood of life's building blocks, amino acids, fatty acids and sugar. These hormones determine at a given time, in case there is a net consumption or storage of energy. The most important form in which energy is stored for a long time is like fat. Many of the hormones that control metabolism therefore regulate how fast fat is stored or consumed. Exactly how they do, however, you do not know.
