Professional background: Chief Operating Officer of F. Hoffmann-La Roche Ltd, Basel, Switzerland, 1990–1995. Prior to appointment as COO, senior management positions at Roche, including Head of the Diagnostics and Pharmaceutical divisions. Earlier positions included Director of Pharmaceutical Marketing Worldwide at Sandoz (now Novartis) and President of Sandoz KK in Tokyo. Formerly on the Board of Syntex Chemicals, Genentech and F. Hoffmann-La Roche Ltd. Other activities and functions: Member of the Board of Directors of the listed company The Medicines Company and the unlisted company MedGenesis Therapeutix Inc.
