Biography
Dr. Dhavalkumar D. Patel, also known as Dhaval, M.D., Ph.D. has been Executive Vice President and Chief Scientific Officer of UCB SA since joining in October 2017. Dr. Patel leads UCB’s research organization with the main goal of bringing scientific innovation to patients and helping them live the life they choose. He joined UCB from Novartis, based in their headquarters in Basel, Switzerland, where for 11 years he led various biomedical research teams in areas of neurology, autoimmunity, transplantation and inflammation from 2006 to 2017. In 2010, he became the Head of Research for the Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research (NIBR) Europe. He served as Chief of the Division of Allergy and Immunology at Duke University from 1994 to 2003, prior to moving to the University of North Carolina to lead the Thurston Arthritis Research Center and the Division of Rheumatology, Allergy and Immunology. From 2003 to 2006, he held positions at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, USA as Director, Thurston Arthritis Research Center; Chief of the Rheumatology, Allergy and Immunology division and Professorships in the Department of Medicine, Microbiology and Immunology. Dr. Patel served as a Member of the Scientific Advisory Board of VLST Corporation. In addition to being a reviewer for more than 15 journals, he has served on the editorial boards for The Journal of Immunology, Arthritis & Rheumatism and Arthritis Research and Therapy. He authored and co-authored over 100 thought-leading publications and presentations. He is a Fellow of the American College of Rheumatology and the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology. His graduate studies were in poxvirus biology. He completed a residency in Internal Medicine and fellowships in Rheumatology and Allergy/Immunology at Duke. He received his Bachelor in Science degree, MD and PhD (Microbiology and Immunology) degrees from Duke University, Durham, NC.
