Biography

Daniele Caramani is Professor of Comparative Politics at the University of Zurich since August 2014. He graduated from the University of Geneva and holds a Ph.D. from the European University Institute, Florence, where he has also been Vincent Wright Fellow in Comparative Politics. He has held academic positions in Florence, Mannheim, Birmingham and St. Gallen. He is the author of Elections in Western Europe since 1815: Electoral Results by Constituencies (Palgrave 2000, with CD-ROM), The Nationalization of Politics (Cambridge University Press 2004) and The Europeanization of Politics (Cambridge University Press 2015). He has authored Introduction to the Comparative Method with Boolean Algebra (Sage, "Quantitative Applications in the Social Sciences" 2009), which has been translated into Chinese and edits the textbook Comparative Politics (Oxford University Press 2017, fourth edition, translated into Italian and Croatian). He regularly publishes articles in scientific journals. Daniele Caramani is Director of the Doctoral Programme "Democracy Studies" and Co-Director of the Constituency-Level Data Archive which has received the APSA "Dataset Award" in 2012. In 2009-12 he was co-editor of EJPR's "Political Data Yearbook". Between 2006 and 2010 he was the editor of the "Swiss Political Science Review". In 2011 he has been the Local Organiser of the ECPR Joint Sessions. In 2004 he has been awarded UNESCO's "Stein Rokkan Prize for Comparative Research in the Social Sciences".

Research Interest

Elections, electoral systems and electoral behaviour, political parties and cleavage systems, state formation and nation-building, comparative methodology, European integration, globalization, regionalism, and GIS cartography. Research follows a broad cross-sectional and longitudinal approach based on large quantitative datasets.
