Prof. Dr. Rolf Kappel

Biography

Rolf Kappel is full Professor of Problems of Developing Countries since September 1, 1992, and is Director of the Postgraduate Course on Developing Countries (NADEL). Professor Kappel was born on September 24, 1948 in Blaubeuren, Germany. After completion of his studies in economics at the Universities of Freiburg in Breisgau and Zurich, he was assistant at the Institute of Computer Science of the University of Zurich and the Center for Economic Research of ETH Zurich. He completed his dissertation on cybernetic models in economics at the University of Zurich in 1977. Subsequently he was a research fellow with the Science Center Berlin. After having returned to the Center for Economic Research in 1980, he worked mainly in the fields of development economics and environment and resource economics. In 1989 he completed his habilitation thesis in economics at the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences (Abt. XII) at the ETH Zurich. In 1992 he was appointed Professor Ordinarius of Problems of Developing Countries. In his teaching and research activities Professor Kappel focuses on reforms of economic policy and institutional reforms in developing countries, on environment and resource policies in developing countries, and on strategic questions of development policy.
