Biography
Jürg Dual has been Full Professor of Mechanics and Experimental Dynamics at the Center for Mechanics of the Institute of Mechanical Systems at ETH Zurich since October 1, 1998. He was President of the Planning Commission (2000-2004) and the University Assembly (2008-2012) of the ETH Zurich. Jürg Dual, born on May 14, 1957, of Winterthur (ZH), studied at the Department of Mechanical Engineering at ETH Zurich. He then spent two years at the University of California at Berkeley on a Fulbright Scholarship. He received his doctorate from Professor Sayir at the Institute of Mechanics at the ETH Zurich. His doctoral thesis was awarded the Latsis Prize 1989 of the ETH Zurich. After a stay as Visiting Assistant Professor at the Department of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics at Cornell University, Ithaca, NY, he was elected to ETH Zurich. He is a fellow of ASME, a member of SATW and an honorary member of the German Association for Materials Research and Testing.
Research Interest
His research focuses on wave propagation and vibration as well as micro and nano-systems engineering. He is particularly interested in fundamentals and applications in the field of vibration sensors (eg viscometry), non-destructive testing, mechanical characterization of microstructures and cell and particle manipulation with ultrasound. In his research, the experiment is central, but should always be embedded in the theoretical modeling with numerical and analytical methods. Since there is a lot of room for innovation in the border area between disciplines, especially for basic sciences such as mechanics, interaction with neighboring disciplines such as bioengineering.
