Roland Siegwart

Biography

Roland Siegwart (1959) has been Full Professor of Autonomous Systems at ETH Zurich since July 2006 and Co-Director of Wyss Zurich. From January 2010 to December 2014, he served as vice president for research and business relations in the Executive Committee. He graduated in 1983 and completed his PhD in 1989 at the Department of Mechanical Engineering of ETH Zurich. He then spent a year as a postdoctoral fellow at Stanford University. Back in Switzerland, he worked from 1991 to 1996 as Research Director of Mecos Traxler AG and as Deputy Head of the Institute of Robotics at ETH Zurich. In 1996 he was appointed Professor of Autonomous Microsystems at the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), where he was a member of the Faculty of Engineering (2002-06) and founding chairman of the EPFL Space Center. In the spring of 2005, he spent a research stay at the NASA Ames Research Center and Stanford University. Roland Siegwart is a board member of the European Network of Robotics (EURON), was vice president in 2004/05 and is currently -Distinguished Lecturer of the -IEEE Robotics and Automation Society-. He was recently appointed to the Swiss Academy of Engineering Sciences and the Grants Committee Excellence Initiative of the German Research Foundation (DFG).

Research Interest

Roland Siegwart is interested in the development and control of mechatronic systems used in complex and highly dynamic environments. Its central goal is the development of new concepts and systems that can handle blurred information, adapt to new situations and act interactively. Application examples include service and space robots, autonomous micro-aircraft, robots that run and float, and driver assistance systems.
