Biography
Dr. Jones is an expert in molecular microbiology and metagenomics, and leads an active and highly productive research team at the University of Brighton and Queen Victoria Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. Overall his research is focused on understanding host-microbe interaction in both pathogens and gut commensals, as well as developing strategies to detect and prevent infection. Brian completed a PhD in microbial pathogenesis at Cardiff University in 2004, investigating the role of swarming in the pathogenesis of Proteus mirabilis urinary tract infections. In 2004 he also joined the Alimentary Pharmabiotic Centre and Microbiology Department at University College Cork, Ireland, where he began to work on the human gut microbiome and associated mobile metagenome. In 2008 he took up a position as a Lecturer at the University of Brighton School of Pharmacy and Biomolecular Sciences. He is currently serving as the Head of Research Development for the Queen Victoria Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, and continues to work as a Reader (Associate Professor) in Molecular and Medical Microbiology at the University of Brighton, where his research group continues to study the pathogenesis of device associated infections, the structure and function of the human gut microbiome, and the development of novel methods to detect and prevent bacterial infections.
