Bernhard Jansen

Biography

Bernhard Jansen is a project leader, researcher and software engineer on smart grid technologies with the Business Optimization group of the Cognitive Computing and Industry Solutions department at IBM Research - Zurich. Bernhard Jansen, born in 1978, received his diploma in computer science in 2004 from the University of Applied Sciences Landshut, Germany, where he also completed a one-year postgraduate study program on systems engineering. From 1999 to 2004, during his studies, he worked part-time for a company called Transfer Data Test on embedded Linux software and hardware for protocol converters and tailor-made VPN devices. In 2003, he joined Texas Instruments for six months to work on his diploma thesis on Bluetooth A2DP, a protocol widely used today in wireless headphones, car hifis and home speakers. In 2004, he joined IBM - Research Zurich in the privacy group working on trusted computing in projects like OpenTC. In 2007, Bernhard Jansen moved to the Systems Management group to work on credential-less asset discovery in IP networks. This work evolved to energy optimization of data centers. In 2009, he was one of the founding members of the smart grid work at IBM Research - Zurich, and since then works on projects like EDISON, EcoGrid EU and EcoGrid 2.0. His research interests include technologies for smart power grids, especally in the IoT space for managment of distributed energy resources such as heating and cooling systems or electric vehicles as well as software architectures and data management to bring such systems to live.
