Biography

I joined the Zurich research lab at the end of 1984, with the intent to stay 4 years - now I have been at the lab more than 32 years. The lab was and still is a unique place to work in Europe. I am an engineer at heart, and over the years became interested in system design. Early 2012, I started working on technology development for the SKA program. Our DOME project aims at providing the technology roadmap for SKA and I manage the microDataCenter within DOME. In 2010, I started to work on microservers (first as a hobby), and I had one at home running on my desk that has apache webserver and a virtual desktop. Even with an external 120GB hard drive, it only used 4.2 Watts! More information can be found here. I now have a 4-core, 1.2 GHz 32-bit ARM ("wandquad") system running Fedora 20, using a mere 3.8 Watt (including SSD) which is powered thru photovoltaics. I also have a twitter feed, where I highlight latest progress on uServer and other topics. I love innovations of all kinds and recently found one that is pretty amazing. Here is an example of green and lightweight technology I use in my free time.
