Biography

Nísia Trindade Lima holds a master’s in Political Science (1989) and PhD in Sociology (1997), both from the Instituto Universitário de Pesquisas do Rio de Janeiro (IUPERJ). She is the current president of the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation, where she served as Vice-President of Teaching, Information, and Communication from 2011 to 2016. In collaboration with Ângela Alonso, she led the Work Group on Brazilian Social Thought within the Brazilian Association of Postgraduate Programs and Research in Social Sciences (ANPOCS) from 2011 to 2012. She was director of the publisher Editora Fiocruz from 2006 to 2011. She holds a CNPq Research Fellowship, level 1C. She is a researcher with the Casa de Oswaldo Cruz Research Department and coordinator of Fiocruz’s Social Sciences and Network, Zika Virus. She participates in international programs and networks in the areas of the history of science and health and sits on the editorial boards of the journals Medical History; Revista Brasileira de História da Ciência; História, Ciências, Saúde—Manguinhos; Cadernos de História da Ciência (Instituto Butantan); and Escritos (Casa de Rui Barbosa Foundation). Her research and teaching interests include the history of science and health, especially the social sciences, and Brazilian social thought. She is currently investigating science and Brazilian social thought; the history of ideas in public health; the sertão in Brazilian thought; the history of development in Brazil; and the history of the social sciences in health.
