Biography
Peter Bachmann was Full Professor of Forest Management Planning and Forest Growth at the ETH Zurich beginning in 1988. He retired end of March 2005. Born on February 5, 1940, and from Buchholterberg BE, Prof. Bachmann studied forestry science at the ETH Zurich and obtained his doctorate at the Institute of Silviculture under Prof. Leibundgut. From 1968-1988 he worked in the canton of Berne as regional head forester, simultaneously working on various research and development projects. His main research lied in the area of forest management planning, where important new developments have been implemented under his direction. He also directed work being carried out in the areas of forest growth, forest inventory and biometrics. From 1992 to 1996 and 1998/99 Prof. Bachmann was chairman of the Department of Forest Sciences. From 1994 to 2000 he has headed the section Forest Development and Management Planning of the Federal Research Institute for Forestry, Snow and Landscape (WSL) in Birmensdorf. From 1999 to 2005 Peter Bachmann was Prorector for Diploma Studies and chairman of the Studies Committee.
