Dällenbach, Lucien

Biography

Lucien Dällenbach was Full Professor of French Language and Literature at the ETH Zurich, beginning in April 1993. He retired end of March 2006. Prof. Dällenbach was born on December 1, 1940 and comes from Bevaix NE. Following his studies in theology at Neuchâtel where he took a degree in 1963, he studied philosophy and early Christian history at Heidelberg, subsequently embarking on a second course of study in French and German Literature at Geneva. After several periods of study in Berlin (F.U.), Cambridge (Gonville and Caius College) and Paris (Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences sociales) Lucien Dällenbach earned his doctorate in 1976 with a dissertation on "autoréflexivité en art et en littérature". The dissertation has been published under the title of "Le récit spéculaire" and translated into several languages, including Japanese. In 1976 Lucien Dällenbach was named professor ordinarius at the University of Geneva (Chaire de Jean Rousset). He has been a guest professor at a number of American universities (Johns Hopkins, NYU, Princeton). His research, teaching and publications focused on: the history of the novel from Balzac to the contemporary novel; "Nouveau Roman" (Butor and Claude Simon); literary theory; aesthetics of the 20th century; francophone literature, including African; dialogue of the cultures (in the context of the Collegium Helveticum).
