Biography
Hannes Flühler was Professor of Soil Physics, starting in April 1983. He was involved in the study of transport processes in soil, specifically in methodology, but also in relation to environmental applications such as nutrient discharge from agricultural and forested areas, ground water pollution, pollutant migration phenomena in waste disposal sites. Prof. Flühler was born on December 4, 1941 and comes from Oberdorf NW and Zurich. He studied at the Department of Forest Sciences and received his doctorate under Professor Felix Richard at the ETH Zurich in 1972. After postgraduate studies at the ETH Zurich, he was the recipient of a grant from the National Science Foundation (1974/75) and later Research Soil Physicist (1975/76) at the University of California Riverside, USA. From 1977 to 1980 he led the Biophysics Group at the Federal Institute for Forestry Research, where he headed the interdisciplinary project "Forest Damage in the Valais". From 1980 to 1983 he headed the Vegetation and Soil Section at this institute. Together with his colleagues, he established the ETH Zurich Forum for Environmental Issues in 1988 and initiated a training program which overlapped various departments. As a member of a several commissions at the ETH Zurich as well as foreign research institutions, he has dedicated himself to environmental research and to promoting interdisciplinary approaches to research.
