Biography
Frank Klötzli was a member of the scientific staff and group leader of Vegetation Science and Community ecology at the former Geobotanical Institute. In 1976 he was given the title of Professor. His research was directed at problems concerning the limits and vitality of dominant plant organisms in forest and grassland as well as the analysis of the effects of browsing. Prof. Klötzli was born on 7 February 1934 and studied at the Department of Biology and Environmental Science (X) at ETH Zurich. After receiving his degree in 1959, his doctorate under Professors Ellenberg and Leibundgut in 1965, and habilitation in 1969, he did postdoctoral work in Lund, Stockholm, and Uppsala, Sweden and in Bangor, Great Britain. He also applied himself to problems of environmental protection and management in tropical high mountain regions. Starting 1969 he has assumed several posts in federal commissions, primarily with the goal of permanently integrating objects of national importance in heavily utilized agricultural zones. In collaboration with Lausanne and Neuchâtel he has headed multidisciplinary projects in wetlands, especially around lakes, for nearly 30 years.
