Martin Funk

Biography

Martin Funk is a university lecturer and head of the Glaciology section of the Laboratory of Hydraulics, Hydrology and Glaciology (VAW) of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH), Zurich. On 22 May 2003, the title of professor was conferred on Martin Funk by the Academic Council of the ETH Zurich. Martin Funk was born on July 18, 1954 in Vienna, Austria and is a citizen of Vandoeuvres, Canton Geneva, Switzerland. In 1979 he completed his degree in civil engineering at the Federal Institute of Technology, Lausanne with a diploma thesis in structural engineering under Prof. L. Badoux. From 1979 to 1985 Martin Funk was a research associate at the Institute of Geography of the ETH Zurich, under Prof. F. Müller and Prof. A. Ohmura. In 1984 he earned his Ph.D. degree under Prof. D. Vischer with a doctoral thesis on the mass balance of the Rhone glacier. From 1986 Martin Funk was employed as a research associate at the VAW, where he took on leadership in 1988 of the working group for Applied Glaciology, and in 1995 he was named head of the Glaciology section of the VAW. Martin Funk is an active certified mountain guide and between 1992 and 1996 was president of the mountain guide committee of the Swiss Alpine Club and member of the board of examiners for the training of mountain guides.
