Biography
Peter Reichert is head of the Department of Systems Analysis, Integrated Assessement and Modelling (SIAM) at the Swiss Federal Institute for Environmental Science and Technology (EAWAG), Dübendorf, and Professor (Titularprofessor) of ETH Zurich. Born in June 1957 in Basel, Switzerland, Peter Reichert studied theoretical physics at the University of Basel, where he also received his PhD degree in 1985 with a thesis in the field of theoretical solid state physics. He then moved to EAWAG where he initially did research in river water quality modelling and later extended his research field to modelling and systems analysis of aquatic systems and to the use of these techniques for decision support. From 1994 to 1999 he was member of the management committe of the Department of Computer and Systems Sciences, before he became head of the newly founded Department of Systems Analysis, Integrated Assessment and Modelling at EAWAG. Since 1991 he has been a lecturer and since 2002 a professor at ETH, initially in the field of mathematical modelling of aquatic systems and later in systems analysis and decision support. In 1999/2000 he took a sabbatical leave at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA, USA.
Research Interest
His research focuses on building mathematical models to gain knowledge about important mechanisms in aquatic systems, applying statistical techniques to analyse and improve the knowledge gained from measured data, and compiling scientific knowledge in integrative models for decision support.
