Biography
Simon Lilly was elected as Full Professor of Experimental Astrophysics in February 2002. His research work is in Observational Cosmology and focusses on studying the formation and evolution of galaxies during the early history of the Universe. He has successfully developed and applied techniques to detect and study many of the most distant galaxies known. Simon Lilly studied for his PhD at the University of Edinburgh (1984) and carried out postdoctoral work at Princton University. He has held faculty positions at the University of Hawaii (1985) and the University of Toronto (1990). Immediately prior to his appointment to the ETH, Simon Lilly was the Director General of the Herzberg Institute of Astrophysics of the National Research Council of Canada, responsible for all the Canadian National Observatories, and in 2001 was identified by the Canadian Foundation for Innovation as one of the 25 leading Innovators in Canada.
