Biography
Provides technical and managerial support to activities in research capacity strengthening and knowledge management. Eddy came to TDR in 2009, having previously worked at the WHO regional office for African as a malaria diagnostics officer based in Harare, Zimbabwe. He did his PhD on the molecular basis for resistance to antimalarial drugs in Kenya, and was a Career Development Fellow before coming to TDR. “That was a chance for national disease control programme personnel to engage in implementation research that would inform control strategies directly. So I really have first-hand experience of capacity building at TDR,” he says. Eddy is keen on the concept of “brain recirculation” rather than “brain drain”. “I truly believe it’s good to train, train and train more people, even if that means they end up working abroad,” says Eddy. “Eventually those people will either boomerang back, or be able to set up good international research collaborations with researchers in their country of origin.”
