Biography
Dr. Christoph von Ballmoos was Born in 1974; 1995-2000: Diploma studies in Biochemistry, ETH Zurich (Prof. Josef Brunner) 2001-2005: PhD thesis on ATP Synthesis at the Institute of Microbiology, ETH Zurich (Prof. Peter Dimroth); 2005-2008: Post-Doc (2005) and Group Leader (2006-2008) at the Institute of Microbiology, ETH Zurich (Prof. Peter Dimroth); 2008-2011: SNF Fellow (3 years) at the Department of Biophysics and Biochemistry, Stockholm University (Prof. Peter Brzezinski); 2012-2014: Principal Investigator (Swedish Research Council, BoD) at the Department of Biophysics and Biochemistry, University of Stockholm; Since April 2014: Assistant Professor Tenure Track at the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, University of Bern; Since August 2017: "Extraordinary Professor" of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, University of Bern
Research Interest
Molecule and signal transport between cellular membranes. The complexity of an intact membrane, however, complicates the analysis of membrane proteins. In our group, we aim to simplify the complexity of natural membranes by reconstituting selected, purified components into a lipid bilayer. Search in vitro systems help to elucidate the molecular details of cellular processes involving membrane proteins.
