1981-1982 studied archeology, Egyptology and older history at the University of Freiburg / Breisgau • 1982-1989 studied Modern German Literature, English and Medieval Literature at the Universities of Freiburg / Breisgau and Munich • 1993 Ph.D. phil. and 1998 habilitation at the University of Munich • 1999-2003 visiting and substitute professorships at the Universities of Vienna, Constance and Frankfurt am Main • 2003 professorship (C 3) for German-language literature of the 18th and 19th centuries and aesthetics at the University of Frankfurt am Main • since 2003 Professor of German Language and Literature at the University of St. Gallen (HSG)
